SAM’S SPECIAL MEDICINE ADVENTURE
Sam’s Special Medicine Adventure is written to help children understand Batten Disease while also helping them understand something even more important: Every person is more than a diagnosis.
While this book explains some of the treatments and therapies that are part of Sam’s life, it is ultimately a story about a little boy who loves monster trucks, laughs often, works hard, and is deeply loved.
Our hope is that every child who reads this book will come away with a better understanding of Batten Disease and a bigger heart for people whose lives may look different from their own. Thank you for helping us share Sam’s story.

To further support conversations with children of a similar age, we have also created Batten Disease for Kids—a one-page guide designed to help explain Batten Disease in a simple, age-appropriate way. The guide provides child-friendly information about Sam’s diagnosis and offers suggestions for how parents, caregivers, and educators can talk with children about his condition. It also includes answers to common questions children may have, helping foster understanding, empathy, inclusion, and friendship as Sam grows and his needs change.
